MARTIN HEIDEGGER (1947)

Philosopher counted among the main exponents of Existentialism who above al explored the notion on "Being".

After studying Catholic theology and medieval Christian philosophy at Freiburg under the influence of Franz Brentano he studied Phenomenology with Edmund Husserl and wrote his doctoral dissertation in 1914.

In 1927 he published Sein und Zeit (Being and Time) his magnum opus which explores the nature and meaning of Being and greatly influenced Existentialist thinkers.

In Was ist Metaphysik? (1929) he elaborated the theme of "nothing".

In 1933-34 Heidegger supported Hitler and after World War II he was investigated by the Allied authorities who found his Nazism not to be of an "active" kind.

Heidegger taught at Freiburg (1915-23), at Marburg (1923-28) and again at Freiburg (1928-44) where he was rector during 1933-34.
