RINALDO DEGLI ALBIZZI (1417)

Florentine general and chief of the city´s oligarchical government from 1417 to 1434.

A member of a wealthy and political powerful family, Albizzi succeeded his father as head of the oligarchy in 1417. Under his leadership, Florence suffered defeats in wars against Filippo Maria Visconti of Milan (1423) and against the city of Lucca (1430). He commanded the army against Lucca but resigned because of accusations of graft.

Albizzi used his position to eliminate his personal enemies, exiling the powerful Cosimo de Medici, and lost popular favour as a result of his defeat in another war with Milan (1434) and his repressive policy. When in September 1434 Cosimo de Medici was elected to the signoria or governing body of Florence, Albizzi exiled himself and allied himself with Florence´s enemies to prepare his return. He was unsuccessful and died in exile.
