WESPAZJAN KOCHOWSKI (1674)

Poet and historian whose epic Psalmodia polska (1695, Polish Psalmody) prefigured a common theme of the Polish Romantic movement -the mesianic role of Poland in the salvation of the world.

During his years in military service (1650-61) he fought against the Cossacks and the Swedes.

He later became court historian for King John III Sobieski and was present at Sobieski´s victory over the Turks at Vienna in 1683.

Kochowski believed Poland to be the chosen nation especially loved by God. The Psalmodia´s 36 psalms represent his best work; though of minor artistic value they express a religious vision that inspired the Romantic nationalism dominant in 19th-century Polish literature.
