Collection of 12 narratives recalling the more notable disasters that befell Portuguese ships between 1552 and 1604. Gathered by Bernardo de Brito and first printed as a whole in 1735-36 the narratives are either told by the survivors or based on their accounts.
The História includes an account of the disaster of the Sao Joâo wrecked on the Natal coast in 1552 which inspired an epic poem by Jerónimo Côrte-Real as well as other poignant verses; and of the Sao Bento the ship that carried Portugal´s great epic poet Luis de Camôes to India and foundered on its return voyage to Portugal in 1554.
The accounts are remarkable for their tragic pathos.
