Popular heroine of the American West in the late 19th century.
A prostitute in various frontier towns, but chiefly associated with the area around Deadwood, S.D., Calamity was a colourful character who wore men´s clothing, carried a gun, and engaged in nwild drinking spreees.
In dime novels of the 1870s and 80s, she was transformed into a beautiful buckskin-clad crusader for justice, who, with her sweetheart "Deadwood Dick", battled against frontier badmen in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
The real Jane appeared in Wild West shows in the 1890s, and at the Buffalo Pan American Exposition of 1901.
