SAINT APOLLINARIS THE APOLOGIST (174)

Bishop of Hierapolis, Phrygia, one of the chief apologists of orthodoxy against contemporary heresies, especially Montanism, a doctrine of false prophecy that arose c. 171 in the Christian Church in Asia Minor.

He is perhaps best remembered for his "Defense of the Faith" (c. 175) addressed to the Roman emperor emperor Marcus Aurelius, defending the Christian faith and attributing the Emperor´s victory in 174 over the Quadi (an ancient Germanic people inhabiting an area later called Moravia, in modern Czechoslovakia) to the prayers of the Christian soldiers.

His apologies, among the earliest, are extant only in fragments. His feast day is January 8.
