Minor but brilliant literary light of the courts of Louis XIII and Louis XIV.

He began visiting the Hôtel de Rambouillet, the literary centre of Paris in 1634 and wrote a succession of romantic verses that won him a reputation culminating in the sonnets controversy of 1649 in which Benserade´s sonnet "Job" was pitted against Vincent Voiture´s "Uranie" in a lively court debate over poetic style. Though Benserade was adjudged the loser, he became a favourite and was repeatedly called on to write libretti for royal ballets, a function he discharged with a wit often regarded by his court audience as daring and even impertinent.

Elected to the Académie Française in 1674, he was criticized in 1676 for his Metamorphoses d´Ovide en rondeaux.

He distinguished himself by his support of the candidacy of La Fontaine for the Académie and by his defense of the rationalism of Pierre Bayle, which the censorship threatened.

Besides his poems and libretti, he wrote several dramas.

THE TRIBE OF BENJAMIN

One of the 12 tribes of Israel, an ancient division of the Jewish people.

The tribe took its name from the younger of two children born to Jacob (also called Israel) and his second wife Rachel.

After the death of Moses, Joshua led the Israelites into the Promised Land and dividing the territory among the 12 tribes, assigned south central Palestine to the tribe of Benjamin.

Members of the tribe were separated when two separate kingdoms were established after the death of King Solomon (922 BC) and the territory of Benjamin was divided between them. Jews of the northern Kingdom of Israel disappeared from history after the Assyrian conquest of 721 BC and are known in legend as the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel. Benjaminites in the southern Kingdom of Judah were assimilated by the more powerful tribe of Judah and gradually lost their identity.

Modern Jews thus considerer themselves to be descendants of the tribes of Judah and Benjamin or are classed as Levites to indicate an affinity with the religious functionaries who at one time exercised the priesthood in ancient Israel.

Saul, the first of Israel´s kings, and St. Paul the Apostle were both of the tribe of Benjamin.

BELSHAZZAR

Akkadian BEL-SHAR-USUR,
Greek BALTASAR OR BALTHASAR.

Corregent of Babylon at whose feast the prophet Daniel, interpreting the handwriting on the wall ("MENE, MENE, TEKEL and PARSIN") foretold the destruction of the city (539).

Belshazzar had been known only from the Book of Daniel (chapter 5) and from Xenophon´s Cyropaedia until 1854 when references to him were found in contemporary Babylonian inscriptions.

He was the eldest son of Nabonidus, king of Babylon (555-539) and of Nitocris who was perhaps a daughter if Nebuchadrezzar. When Nabonidus went into exile (550) he entrusted Belshazzar with the throne and the major part of his army.

Belshazzar administered the government, his owen estates, and those of his father, though famine and economic setbacks occurred prior to his father´s return (c 540).

Belshazzar died after Babylon fell without resistance to the Persian general Gobryas (Oct 12, 539).

RÉMY BELLEAU (1547-74)

Renaissance scholar and poet who wrote highly polished portraits known as miniatures; member of the Pléiade, a literary circle that sought to enrich French literature by reviving the classical tradition in poetry by the use of Greco-Latin themes, forms, and rhetorical devices. A contemporary of the poet Pierre de Ronsard at the Collège de Cocqueret, Belleau at first gained the patronage of the Abbé Chretophle de Choiseul and later of Charles IX and Henry III, who made him secretary of the king´s chamber.

He took part in a champaign against Naples in 1557 and from about 1563 lived at Joinville as tutor and counsellor to the Guises, a powerful Catholic family. It was the Château de Guise that inspired La Bergerie (1565-72), a collection of pastoral odes, sonnets, hymns, and amorous verse.

Belleau´s detailed descriptions of nature and works of art earned him a reputation as a miniaturist in poetry and prompted Ronsard to characterize him a a painter of nature.

His other poetic works include didactic verse; Les Amours et nouveaux échanges des pierres précieuses (1576), a commentary on exotic stones and their inherent secret virtues written in the tradition of the medieval lapidaries; La Reconnue (1577), a comedy in verse based on Plautus Casina; and a macaronic poem on the religious wars.

His erudite translations of Anacreon´s Odes (1556) won him the seventh seat or star in the constellation of the Pléiade, a name the group adopted in imitation of a group of eminent Greek poets of 250 BC.

(his collected works were edited an published in 1867)
